📖 The Story
Omkar Parvat has been the site of the Pandava’s Agyatvaas. When he asked Lord Krishna why his suffering, God told him about this Agyatvaas due to Pitrurina (the ancestral debt). At the same time, he described the law of worship of Shiva on the Rin Mukteshwar, an ancient temple near the Narmada-Kaveri Sangam on Omkar Varavat Parikrama Marg. Pandavas established a Shivling during their Agyatwas by performing penance of Lord Shiva for debt relief. During the Pauranic period, gold lentils were used on the Shivling, later it became important to add gram lentils.

1. Liberation from Debts (Rin Mukti)
The temple is named Rin Mukteshwar, meaning “Lord Shiva who liberates from debts.” According to legend, Lord Krishna advised the Pandavas to worship Shiva here to free themselves from Pitrurina (ancestral debt). Worship at this temple is believed to absolve devotees of:
Material debts (loans and obligations)
Karmic debts from past lives
Ancestral debts (spiritual responsibilities to forefathers)
2. Pandava Association
During their Agyatvaas (incognito exile), the Pandavas are said to have established a Shivling at this spot and performed intense penance. This act linked the temple to their spiritual journey, especially Yudhishthira’s quest to understand and repay cosmic debts.
3. Sacred Location
Situated near the Narmada-Kaveri Sangam, the temple lies on the Omkar Parvat Parikrama Marg, a path walked by pilgrims performing parikrama (circumambulation) of Omkareshwar—one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. This makes it a spiritually powerful stop along a major pilgrimage route.
4. Unique Rituals
Historically, gold lentils were offered on the Shivling as a symbolic repayment of debts. Today, gram lentils (chana daal) are used by devotees during worship, signifying humility and continuity of an ancient practice.
5. Pauranic & Tantric Importance
The temple is considered powerful not just in Vedic traditions, but also in Tantric practices associated with Lord Shiva. It is seen as a place of release, resolution, and renewal—a point where burdens can be unshackled through sincere devotion.
