The appearance of the Mamaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Vindhya Mountains performed a severe penance dedicated to Lord Shiva to gain supremacy over all mountains. Witnessing this intense penance, the Gods and Rishis prayed to Lord Shiva to remain in the Vindhya region.
Lord Shiva accepted their request and stayed there in the form of a Lingam. The Omkar Lingam here is divided into two forms. The Sadashiva who resides under the Pranava is known as Omkar.
Similarly, the Jyoti, worshipped in Parthivamurthy, is called Parmeshwar or Amaleshwar Jyotirlinga, now known as Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga.
Thus, the Jyotirlinga manifested in two forms, both divine and inseparable.
Temple Architecture
Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is a five-storied structure with a pagoda on each floor. Additionally, there are six more temples within the temple compound. The finest stone temple here is currently under the care of the Archaeological Department. Lord Shiva has been worshipped in the form of Partheswar Linga since the time of Devi Ahilya Bai.
The Mamleshwar Mahadev Temple is situated on the southern bank of the Narmada River, adorned with a towering flag that constantly waves.
Sanctum Sanctorum
In the Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, mantras are inscribed on the north and south walls in the outer chamber of the sanctum sanctorum. It appears that these mantras were meticulously engraved. Each word is carved with clarity, precision, and beauty. Indeed, it would be challenging to replicate such beautiful and uniform writing on paper compared to what we see on these stone walls.
It is nothing less than a mystery to us.
Many people visit the Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga temple, but only a few take the time to see these inscriptions, which pose profound questions.
Through these inscriptions, we encounter the powerful mantra “OM Namah Shivaya” and have read other significant texts. These inscriptions were engraved in 1063 AD. These beautiful structures have Maa Narmada Stuti, Halayud Strotra and Shiva Parvati Praise along with the Mahim mantra.
